A shared religion proved a new lesson

A shared religion proved a new lesson- is indicative of my interest around ideas of first contact, views of indigenous peoples and the exoticism of the other; issues shared by many countries with colonial histories. For many years my use of images like the hibiscus flower and/or feathers have been in reference to symbols of cultural identity and pride, but also represent an over simplification and generalization of ethnic communities. This drawing was created by connecting single sheets of loose leaf to form the final image.
