Art at Amtrak | New York Penn Station
The Amtrak Rotunda at Penn Station is a symbolic gateway, connecting people and histories. Inspired by Caribbean culture and Indigenous and African spiritual practices, I created a site-specific work that transformed the rotunda into a cosmic terminal, blending influences from Indigenous and Afro-Futurism with the concept of Mestizaje.
For this work, I fused imagery from various periods and sources, from cartoons and 18th-century etchings to pre-colonial glyphs and Amtrak's archive. The installation features maps, train cars, and design elements from Amtrak's history, creating a futuristic space that blends past and present. The artwork, titled Get Carried Away, You Have the Right, incorporates temporal beings, cosmic serpents, and a celestial gateway, symbolizing Amtrak's role in connecting people and stories across time.
Through this transformative installation, I merged the past with the present, creating a space that invites viewers to contemplate their place within history and imagine new possibilities for the future.
